Backyard Birding and Butterfly Bonanzas at Crooked Pines Nature Trail

The Crooked Pines Nature Trail winds through 25 acres of diverse habitats, from dense forest corridors to open meadows and wetland fringes. As an avid naturalist and farm educator, I am continously in awe of the incredible variety of life that calls our nature trail home. From majestic birds of prey to delicate pollinators, the sights and sounds of our backyard ecosystem are truly captivating.

Avian Inhabitants of Crooked Pines

Our resident Pileated Woodpeckers are a constant presence, their loud, distinctive calls echoing through the woods as they forage for insects in the dead and dying trees. These impressive birds, the largest of North America’s woodpeckers, are a true delight to watch as they skillfully excavate their rectangular nest cavities high in the canopy. A nearby pair has returned to the same sycamore tree for the past three breeding seasons, captivating visitors with their acrobatic behaviors and vibrant crimson crests.

But the Pileated Woodpeckers are not the only avian celebrities at Crooked Pines. Each spring, we eagerly await the arrival of our migratory songbirds, like the brilliant male Scarlet Tanager and the sweet-singing Veery. The lush floodplain forest along our creek provides crucial stopover habitat for these long-distance travelers, offering sustenance and shelter as they make their epic journeys. Vigilant birdwatchers armed with binoculars and field guides can spot dozens of warbler species flitting through the understory, including the cheerful Yellow Warbler and the reclusive Ovenbird.

Even our resident Red-Shouldered Hawks get in on the action, soaring overhead and vocalizing their distinctive “kee-yer” calls as they patrol their territories. With patience and a keen eye, visitors can spot their bulky stick nests high in the canopy, tracking the progress of the nestlings as they grow from fuzzy hatchlings to fledglings taking their first tentative flights.

Lepidopteran Delights

Crooked Pines is truly a butterfly haven, with dozens of species fluttering through the diverse habitats. From the stately Eastern Tiger Swallowtail to the diminutive Silvery Checkerspot, our nature trail is alive with the dance of these winged wonders. Keen-eyed visitors can spot the iridescent blue of the Red-Spotted Purple or the regal Orange Sulphur visiting the abundant nectar-producing plants like Joe Pye Weed, Purple Coneflower, and Butterfly Bush.

To maximize your chances of butterfly sightings, scan the sunny, sheltered areas of the trail, where these ectothermic insects bask to regulate their body temperatures. Keep an eye out for clusters of butterflies puddling on damp soil or rock surfaces, where they gather to obtain essential nutrients and minerals. And don’t forget to look closely at the leaves and flowers – some species, like the Monarch, are perfectly camouflaged when their wings are closed.
