Seasons and Celebrations
Mother Nature puts on quite a show when spring arrives at Crooked Pines Farm. As the landscape transforms from winter’s slumber, seasonal signals like budding trees, blooming daffodils, and the return of migrating birds all herald the coming of warmer weather. For our dedicated team, this is an exciting time as we prepare to welcome visitors to our annual Spring Flower Festival.
Seasonal Cycles on the Farm
Here in our USDA zone 7b climate, the early months of the year bring a whirlwind of activity as we rush to tend the garden beds, start cool-season crops indoors, and clean up from winter storms. While the chilly nights keep us on our toes, we rejoice in the sight of those first green shoots emerging from the soil. By late February, we’re already spotting the vibrant pink blossoms of our cherry trees and the cheerful yellow daffodils dotting the landscape. As March arrives, the bulbs, brassicas, and early flowering shrubs burst into bloom, setting the stage for our springtime celebration.
Crops and Cultivation
Even as the festival preparations ramp up, our growing work continues unabated. We’re busy transplanting our cool-season greens like spinach, kale, and arugula from the greenhouse into the garden beds, following the latest weather forecasts to time our plantings just right. With our mild winters, many of these crops overwinter beautifully, providing lush harvests throughout the spring season. We also keep a close eye on our broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and other brassicas as they develop their nutritious heads and florets. Of course, we can’t forget to stay vigilant against any pesky caterpillars or other garden pests that may try to munch on our tender young plants.
Floral Festivities
As the farm awakens from its winter slumber, the air becomes infused with the sweet, earthy scents of blooming flowers. From the delicate hellebores and wood hyacinths to the bold, bright tulips and daffodils, our gardens erupt in a kaleidoscope of colors that signals the arrival of spring. It’s the perfect time to celebrate the changing of the seasons, and that’s exactly what we do at our annual Spring Flower Festival.
The Spring Flower Festival
Blooming Bounty
For two glorious weekends each April, Crooked Pines Farm opens its gates to the public for our much-anticipated Spring Flower Festival. Visitors are welcomed by the sight of cherry trees in full bloom, their pink petals carpeting the ground beneath them. As guests meander through our gardens, they’ll encounter a dazzling array of spring blooms, from magnolias and azaleas to irises and peonies. Our cutting garden overflows with vibrant tulips and ranunculus in every color imaginable, providing the perfect backdrop for photo ops.
Visitors and Experiences
Throughout the festival, we offer a variety of engaging activities for the whole family. Little ones can delight in our scavenger hunt through the gardens, searching for birds, butterflies, and other signs of spring. Budding naturalists can join guided nature walks to learn about the diverse flora and fauna found on our property. For those with green thumbs, we host hands-on gardening workshops covering topics like seed starting, container planting, and organic pest control. And of course, no visit is complete without perfecting the art of the flower crown or strolling through our labyrinth for a moment of peaceful reflection.
Community Engagement
Our Spring Flower Festival is more than just a celebration of the season – it’s an opportunity to connect with our local community. Throughout the festival, we partner with artisans, food vendors, and musicians to showcase the rich cultural tapestry of our region. Guests can browse the wares of local potters, weavers, and woodworkers, or savor the flavors of specialty farm-to-table cuisine prepared by our favorite caterers. Live musical performances by regional artists provide a soothing soundtrack as visitors meander through the blooms. It’s a truly immersive experience that celebrates the bounty of spring in all its glory.
