Welcome to Crooked Pines Farm, a family-owned operation nestled in the rolling hills of Vermont. For over a century, our team has dedicated themselves to sustainable agriculture, cultivating the land and sharing our harvest with the community. Each spring, we eagerly await the arrival of maple sugaring season – a time-honored tradition that brings people together to celebrate the sweet rewards of nature.
Farm Operations
Farm History
Crooked Pines Farm has been in our family for four generations. In the late 1800s, my great-grandparents homesteaded this land, clearing fields and planting orchards to provide for their growing household. As the years passed, the farm evolved, adapting to the needs of the times. We diversified our crops, tended livestock, and explored new avenues of food production – all while upholding the principles of environmental stewardship that have guided us from the beginning.
Maple Syrup Production
One of our most cherished legacies is our maple sugaring operation. The maple trees that dot our landscape have been tapped for generations, their sap meticulously collected and transformed into the pure, amber-hued maple syrup that graces breakfast tables across the region. It’s a labor-intensive process, but one that fills us with a deep sense of pride and connection to the land.
Sustainable Practices
Sustainability is the heart of our farming philosophy. We utilize organic growing methods, practice crop rotation, and carefully manage our watersheds to ensure the long-term health of the soil and ecosystem. Our commitment to renewable energy, minimal waste, and biodiversity preservation further reinforces our role as stewards of this beautiful stretch of Vermont countryside.
Maple Sugaring Event
Open House Details
Each spring, we invite the public to join us for a Maple Sugaring Open House, a celebration of the season and a chance to experience the magic of maple syrup production firsthand. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, April 15th, from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors are welcome to arrive at any time during these hours to embark on a guided tour of our sugar house, observe the sap-to-syrup transformation, and partake in a variety of family-friendly activities.
Tour Schedule
Our tours run every 30 minutes, with the first one kicking off at 10:15 am and the last one starting at 3:45 pm. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes stops at our maple tree groves, the sap collecting station, and the sugar house, where you’ll learn about the history, science, and craft of maple syruping.
Visitor Activities
In addition to the tours, we’ll have plenty of ways for you and your family to immerse yourselves in the maple sugaring experience. Participate in a maple tree tapping demonstration, sample freshly made maple candy, and browse our selection of maple-themed crafts and products in our farm store. Children can enjoy a scavenger hunt, maple-themed arts and crafts, and story time with our resident farm educator.
Maple Syrup
Maple Tapping
The maple sugaring season begins in late February or early March, as the first signs of spring awaken the trees. Our team carefully selects the healthiest maple specimens, drilling small tapholes into their trunks and inserting spiles to allow the sap to freely flow.
Sap Collection
Once the sap starts running, we diligently collect it in buckets or use a network of tubing to channel the flow into our centralized storage tanks. The sap is a clear, slightly sweet liquid, containing only about 2% sugar. Gathering enough to produce a single gallon of maple syrup requires the sap from approximately 40 gallons of this precious resource.
Syrup Processing
In the sugar house, we boil the sap over a wood-fired evaporator, carefully monitoring the temperature and density to ensure the perfect maple syrup consistency. As the water content evaporates, the natural sugars become increasingly concentrated, transforming the sap into the rich, aromatic syrup we know and love. The entire process can take up to 12 hours, requiring diligence and patience from our skilled sugarmakers.
Visitor Experience
Festive Atmosphere
The Maple Sugaring Open House is a festive celebration, filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of the season. Visitors will be greeted by the warm glow of the sugar house, the steady rhythm of the evaporator, and the tantalizing aroma of maple-infused delights. Our team of knowledgeable guides and friendly volunteers will ensure that every guest feels welcomed and immersed in the magic of maple sugaring.
Educational Opportunities
At Crooked Pines Farm, we believe that education is a crucial part of our mission. Throughout the open house, our farm educators will be on hand to share their expertise, answer questions, and provide hands-on learning experiences. Visitors can delve into the science behind maple syrup production, discover the importance of pollinators in the maple ecosystem, and explore the cultural history of this cherished tradition.
Community Engagement
The Maple Sugaring Open House is more than just a showcase of our farm’s operations – it’s an opportunity to bring our community together. Local artisans, food producers, and entertainers will be on-site, offering a tapestry of maple-inspired wares, treats, and performances. We encourage visitors to linger, connect with neighbors, and celebrate the rich agricultural heritage that defines our region.
